UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein, a former coalmine, posed a particular challenge for developing an appropriate museum concept and exhibition design. The cultural significance of the listed building complex led to a sensitive and creative handling with the found spaces filled with historic machines. Rather than competing with the building, the exhibition unfolds a distinct, chary character. A lucid guiding system and an intuitive physical structure was the objective of the concept. The result is a museum that is as unique as its building.
